A fire started by an empty jar of Nutella being left on a windowsill, resulted in the heart-breaking loss of a family pet.
Mr and Mrs Murphy and their two daughters had gone out for dinner to celebrate their wedding anniversary, when the fire started; leaving Chili, the Jack Russell behind. The jar, which was being used to store loom bands, had been left on the windowsill. However as the low winter sun rays shone into the room they were refracted by the jar and became focused on their daughters’ bedroom blinds causing the blinds to catch fire.

The blaze spread through the flat destroying a first floor bedroom and damaging the roof. Sadly Chili could not escape the flat and died.
A spokesperson from the London Fire Service explained that this is by no means an isolated incident, with 125 fires in the last 5 years being caused by the sun’s rays and warned that these incidents can happen in winter as well as summer. He encouraged people to check their window ledges are free from any glass or crystal that could potentially cause a life changing blaze.”
